The burn ban in Sarasota County was lifted on July 12 after drought conditions improved.
The Keetch-Byram Drought Index, which measures drought conditions on a scale of 0-800, fell below 500 for seven consecutive days, consequently lifting the burn ban that’s been in effect in Sarasota County since April 19.
During that time, residents were prohibited from open burning, including burning yard waste, using fire pits and setting off fireworks –– the latter being especially contentious over the Fourth of July holiday.
The drought isn’t over, however, and county officials warn the burn ban could be reinstated if conditions worsen in the coming weeks. Officials are encouraging residents to continue to use caution as dry conditions persist in the county.
Manatee County’s burn ban was far less extensive, starting on June 23 and lifting on July 8.
