In 2024, Floridians paid $24 billion more in property taxes than in 2019.

Gov. Ron DeSantis claimed during a recent appearance on Varney & Co., a show on Fox Business network, that Florida’s property tax revenue was $32 billion in 2019 and increased to $56 billion in 2024. While those numbers are slightly off –– closer to $31 billion and $55 billion –– the gap is roughly the same.

DeSantis highlighted the increase to show how much more Floridians are paying in property taxes today, and to garner support for his plan to eliminate the tax for homesteaders. 

In other words, DeSantis wants to abolish property taxes for a person’s primary and occupied residence, not for rental properties or second homes.
