Florida drivers over the age of 80 must pass a vision test before renewing their license.
The test must be taken regardless of if someone renews in-person, online or by mail. It can be administered at a local driver’s license office, by a doctor licensed in Florida or a licensed physician at a federally-established veterans hospital.
If problems are identified in the test, the driver will be referred to an eye specialist for possible improvement.
Failing the test doesn’t mean it’s illegal to drive that same day, but the license won’t be able to be renewed until minimum vision requirements are met.
Florida has a large elderly population given its status as a prime retirement state. Nearly 4.5 million Floridians were ages 65-84 in 2025, while 611,902 were 85 or older.
